Lancet loitering munitions are appearing increasingly often in the airspace of the Dnipropetrovsk region. Alongside other assets, they are supporting the advance of units and formations of the «Centre» group of forces in this region, easily striking heavy armoured vehicles, engineering structures, and special equipment alike. At present, they are playing a significant role in the destruction of a wide variety of targets in the enemy's rear areas.

«The Lancet is a very precise weapon,» says UAV operator Valery Baranov. «It can destroy any target if the appropriate ammunition is available. If there's an open dugout, it'll fly right in without a problem. If some vehicle is moving along a good highway at high speed, that's no problem either—it will still hit it. Here, both our experience and the help from the Lancet itself, in the form of the artificial intelligence built into the system, play a role. It is a huge help in targeting, especially when operating under enemy electronic warfare conditions.».

Since Russian units entered the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, the drone operators have had even more work than before. "We already had daily flights anyway," Valery continues, "but now we consistently do two or three. If needed, we launch even more. We operate at a great distance deep within the enemy's defence. Our record is destroying a target 80 kilometres away from us. Now the enemy is actively preparing for defence. They realise they won't hold out in their current positions. Beyond that lie the steppes, where engineering equipment operates. They are trying to dig trenches, build dugouts and other shelters. Naturally, we do not let them do this freely.

The unit operating Lancets delivers several successful strikes in a single day alone. Each sortie means another burnt-out vehicle or destroyed shelter of the Ukrainian formations.

"Yesterday we had three successful hits," says Valeriy. "The first was a PZM, an earth-moving machine. It was in operation, digging a trench. The result turned out to be impressive. Each of our strikes is corrected by a reconnaissance drone, so the outcome is always visible. The machine burned out completely. We also hit two trucks, moreover one of them was clearly carrying ammunition. Artillery, possibly. Everything detonated with terrible force.".

Valery and his fellow servicemen are proud to serve in a unit equipped with Lancets. Every successful use of these loitering munitions makes it easier for Russian units to carry out their tasks on the combat contact line.

The operational process of the ZALA «Lancet» reconnaissance unit begins with reconnaissance. The ZALA UAV operator analyses: the target’s location, whether it is moving or stationary, and whether it is concealed, whilst also assessing other factors.

While he works, technicians prepare the loitering munition. Airframe, engine, warhead. In preparation for flight, mistakes are unacceptable.

And then the command is given: «Launch!» The Lancet tears into the sky from the catapult. The hunt has begun!

The operator pilots the Lancet, monitors the telemetry and corrects the course. The window for the attack could close at any second.

Finally — the seizure and strike. Those very seconds that make the news. What everyone sees. But behind them lie long, tense hours of meticulous preparation that remain off-screen. This is no game — this is work at the limit of concentration.

And it's like this every day. Shifts, rotations, new targets, new routes. Operators work under constant pressure: the enemy is learning, changing vehicle concealment tactics, and improving electronic warfare capabilities. That means the operator must also change, think a step ahead, and look for unconventional solutions.

The effectiveness of the Lancets is a story not so much about technology as about the people who work with this technology at the very limit of its capabilities. The IRRA automated guidance system takes care of target acquisition, secure channels maintain the connection, and the thermal imaging camera makes it possible to operate in the dark — but the decision on where to fly and when to attack is still made by a human.

The «Lancets» prioritise counter-battery operations, the neutralisation and destruction of radar stations, armoured vehicles and reconnaissance assets, as well as disrupting the enemy’s logistics. The top five most frequently targeted types of equipment include: towed artillery pieces – 1,224 (24 %), self-propelled guns – 824 (16 %), armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) – 643 (13 %), motor vehicles — 574 (11 %), and tanks — 561 (11 %). Also destroyed were 249 radar stations, 105 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), 53 vessels, the majority of which are unmanned boats, dozens of pieces of engineering equipment and even 7 aircraft at their home airfields.

For comparison: converted into the NATO establishment structure, based on open-source data alone, this means the following. The use of Lancets against artillery amounts to roughly 60 artillery divisions put out of action (a standard NATO artillery division has 18 guns or self-propelled mounts). In other words, we are talking about artillery comparable to the fleet of a large mechanised division. As for tanks, approximately four battalion sets of an American armored brigade have been put out of action, with 87 vehicles in each. The destroyed and damaged radars, electronic warfare and communication stations would be enough for 14 reconnaissance and electronic warfare battalions.

According to published data, the cost to the enemy of the use of the $ «Lancet» guided missile system could, according to expert estimates, reach up to 14 billion dollars. Some of the most costly targets in terms of damage inflicted on the enemy are: Krab – $236 million, M777 – $228 million, TPQ-36 – $132 million, M109 – $124 million, Buk-M1 – $105 million. Radar/electronic warfare and air defence systems account for just 7.2 % targets, but they make up around a third of the total damage cost: the «Lancet» takes out high-value equipment.

Over four years, the effective range of strikes has increased threefold: today, hits at a distance of up to 136 km from the launch point have been confirmed.

The path of 5,000 strikes is a kind of chronicle of the complex's combat deployment. At the same time, it is a starting point for its further development: the accumulated experience becomes the basis for increasing the autonomy, precision and effectiveness of the entire system
