ZALA UAVs conducted an aerial survey of a penguin colony in Antarctica
ZALA specialists participating in the 71st Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) performed an aerial survey of the penguin colony on Kamenny Island. The birds« habitat is located near the Russian Antarctic station Mirny. In order to protect the population, the island is completely closed to human visitation, so the study of penguins living here is possible only from the air.
Operators of the ZALA T-16 unmanned aerial vehicle system, together with scientists, conducted a aerial surveys colonies from an altitude of several hundred metres as part of a biological monitoring programme. The BWS survey of the area did not disturb the birds, but allowed us to see their habitats and view the penguins themselves. The data collected provided the basis for the creation of an orthophoto that will be used to analyse their habitat in more depth.
